Not Sure How To Read A Shy Guy...

I truly need your advice! There is a very attractive boy in my Poetry class, I recognized him the first day from a party I was at. Where he (according to my friends) was looking at me, but made a strange comment referring to my clothes... I'm not exactly sure what he said, but I do know it wasn't a nice comment. So, first day of class he sat beside me and I could see him looking at me like he recognized me. Second class, he sat as far away from me as he possibly could. For at least 2 weeks he sat away from me but, he would look at me.. My friends started to notice this, that's how much he looked! Anyways, I made it late to class and he was sitting in my seat, so I took the seat beside him. Awkward silence until I introduced myself, he was very nice shook my hand and told me his name. He seemed alittle nervous, but he smiled alot. I thought things went well, next class rolled around. And he sat on the other side of the room again! On break I left to use the washroom, and I ran into him. He just looked at me, didn't smile, didn't say anything, just walked away... :( Finally, my latest class proved to be very interesting. I was there early, and he sat beside me when there were other seats open. On break, I got up to go talk to my friends on the other side of the room, and he was looking at me again. Then the end of class I said I liked his t-shirt and he seemed impressed that I knew the band on his shirt. It looked like he started to blush he went alittle red in the cheeks, then he started to walk away awkwardly. The whole thing just seemed strange yet good.

Confused :(

Yeah the dude likes you all right. Here’s another instance where partial identification skills come in handy. Put yourself in his shoes and imagine how terrified the poor guy is. He likes you and doesn’t have a clue as to how to go about winning you. He's probably also nursing a big case of fear of rejection, as well!

He needs a helping hand from you.

You’re going to need to make the first move. He needs to be hit over the head with a love hammer in order to know, without a doubt, that you like him.

Give him lots of what I call Green Lights, which include: approachable body language, smiling, facing him, asking interested questions, and saying positive things to him.
If that doesn’t move the mountain, then we’ll have to get a stick of dynamite!

He should be able to move forward if you offer him the training wheels I outlined.

Win Your Ex Back Step 2

Even the most superficial of today’s “get your ex back” programs recommend that the first thing you need to do is back off, curb your sense of urgency, and take some time to calm down and reflect.

There are good reasons for this advice. But there’s more to it than that. You need to go even deeper.
Questions to ask yourself would be: What is it that you and your ex were looking for in the relationship? What is it you were seeking in the other person?

I don’t mean why you were attracted to your ex.  I mean, what is the fundamental Universal Human Need that causes people to get into relationships to begin with? I’ll give you a hint: it’s not sex, or not exactly.

A thorough reconciliation program will go further and deeper than all the quick fix methods out there. Without a clear understanding of what holds human relationships together, how can you ever hope to restore what's broken?  It’s like trying to build a house without understanding gravity.

Woman Who Wonders if Cybersex is Cheating

Today I am going to share with you a letter I received at my Ask Dr Love Advice Column.

I am so confused. My boyfriend of 4 years has lied to me about an internet relationship that began over 4 months ago. He says that he has turned to the internet because he has limited friends and I am not around. He has dangled the 'carrot' of living together as an option to marriage since he has two more years of school and lives over 300 miles away .

I became aware of this relationship after he started talking about his ' e-mail buddy' and started knocking the concept of marriage. He said it was harmless and that she called him for 'counsel.' Then they started talking on the phone. I have known for some time that he was a liar but I thought he would not lie to me. He repeatedly stated that there was nothing going on as they live over 1000 miles away. Several days ago my instinct (which is always right) told me to check his e-mail. They had plans to meet. Also, I found that he was having phone sex with this person and two others. Needless to say he was furious that I invaded his privacy (he gave me the password).

He wants to reconcile and even proposed marriage. I don't think I can trust him. My question is ... Do you think this warrants as cheating?

Signed by:
Do his actions can be called cheating?

My answer:

If you feel cheated upon, then you are being cheated on. Even though he didn't cheat in action, he is making tracks to cheat by making a date to meet with this woman. Plus, he is cheating you out of himself by placing his energy in flirting with and verbally making love to others. Every woman needs to feel that she is her boyfriend's or husband's number one girl. Clearly you aren't feeling this.

What's equally unacceptable is the fact that he lied to you. Let's face facts. If he's so lonely without you, he could get on the horn and talk to you, not some stranger. By making imaginary love with others, he's pushing you away. Yes, he's an intimacy and commitment phobic and a liar.

But enough about him. It's you I'm worried about. You said you knew he lies but never thought he'd lie to you. I'm afraid you've been living in denial here. It feels like some unfinished childhood business is afoot. I get the sense that your unconscious has chosen a man that lies because you are used to being lied to. The unconscious fantasy behind this choice is the wish that this time around you will fix the liar. Isn't this exactly what you said,'I never thought he'd lie to me.' But, he's lying to you about not being involved with someone else. He is planning to meet with his cybersex partner.

At this point, your focus must be on fixing you. If you focus on the question, was he really cheating, you will miss the point entirely. This isn't about him. It's about you and your willingness to talk yourself out of the truth. About your way of pulling the wool over your eyes. About your need to hold on to the fantasy that a liar won't lie to you.

As part of your healing, you will also need to face the fact that you can't fix him. People that lie usually don't want to change their ways. Lying is a pattern that is learned early in life, and it becomes a deep-seated part of that person's personality. It is a coping strategy that is used to avoid pain and escape punishment. And, unless a person experiences great suffering as a result of lying, he or she will rarely give it up. So, you need to assume that he won't stop lying to you. Do not believe words or promises that he will change, unless he makes a behavioral follow-through and gets professional help.

So, focus on understanding what piece of your childhood you are trying to heal. Which parent lied to you? Then, own your fantasy: that you will fix that lying parent and never be lied to again. Next, take a look at reality. Does your partner want to fix himself. Is he making steps to do so? And, if your answer is no, then you will need to face the facts. He will never change and your life will be filled with a series of lies. And, ultimately, you will then need to make a reality-based, not a fantasy-based choice by asking yourself: Do I want to live with someone who will always lie to me? Am I willing to stay with him knowing that he will never change.

The only way you will be able to fully face reality and not live under the fantasy that he will never lie to you is for you to heal your Old Scar from childhood. When that wound is healed, you will no longer wish to fix liars in your adult life. And this man will become a thing of the past!

I hope that my answer clarifies where you are and what you need to do.

Girlfriend Cheated on Me with a Lesbian

Today I am going to share with you another letter I received at my Ask Dr Love Advice Column.

Five days ago, my ex broke up with me and confessed to cheating on me with another girl. She thinks she could could be lesbian and wants time alone to figure it out. She said that we might be able to work it out. It was so sudden, it left me in shock and heart broken. Iv always put her first and did my best to make her happy. I love her. She says she still loves me. But i kinda feel like she is playing games, just to keep me there. Honesty I don't what to do or how to feel. Its a conflict inside. Should i wait and hope we can work it out? Or walk away and prevent further heartbreak from her? I love her so much, but I don't want to feel this pain anymore.
Signed by:
emotional damage

I’m so sorry to hear what you’re being put through.
I noticed that you didn’t say that you felt her foray into lesbian territory is driven by a genuine need to determine if she’s bi-sexual or not.
On the contrary, you said that you feel like she’s playing games with you. Are you saying that she’s pretending to be gay, just to have the fun of playing the field? Or are you saying that she’s playing games to get you jealous? To build up her ego?
How you feel about her actions is significant. If you feel like you’re being played, you’re being played.
By the way, Freud said that all humans are bi-sexual by nature. This means we can naturally swing either way. Once we form a monogamous relationship, we choose to commit to that person and close the doors to other options. That doesn’t mean that you don’t continue to feel attractions to others, both male and female. You just choose to not act on these attractions so as to not rupture your relationship.
What she’s doing is not considerate of you. She’s gratifying her wishes to screw around. The net effect is a giant screw you.
The bottom line is this: she doesn’t get to play around on you. Since you said you don’t want to feel the pain any more, you’re going to need to step away from her.
You can tell her that she can play around all she wants, but she can’t have you at the same time. When she figures out what she wants, she can contact you. If you’re single, you can see how you feel about giving her another shot. I would be very, very wary of trusting her again.
I’m so sorry that you’ve been hurt like this.
Promise me that you won’t allow her actions to cause you to doubt your manhood.
Research shows that the majority of women who become lesbians do so because of having been sexually molested in the past.

Please keep in touch and let me know how you’re doing.

What’s Your Relationship IQ? How To Measure Your "Heart Smarts"!

Everyone’s heard of an IQ, or an “Intelligence Quotient.” We all know that we have one, and most people would prefer to have at least a normal or above average IQ (and most people probably think they do). But when it comes to relationships, a high IQ score is no measure of how smart you are in love. It doesn’t measure the intelligence of your heart, only your head. To measure that, I’ve devised a new metric I call the RIQ, or Relationship Intelligence Quotient.

In fact, when it comes to relationships, listening to your head can often be fatal, and is often the cause of a wide variety of relationship troubles. This is because too often we’re thinking about what we should be doing or how things should be instead of feeling, and relationships are ruled by the heart, not the head: they’re about feelings, not facts or logic, and feelings are quite often anything but strictly logical. You can’t only think your way out of relationship conflicts. You have to feel your way through them.
You could say that the heart isn’t exactly  illogical, but has its own kind of logic. As Pascal said, “Le cÅ“ur a ses raisons, que la raison ne connaît point,” which means, the heart has its reasons that reason doesn’t understand! IQ measures your reasoning and logical faculties, your memory, and your knowledge of various subjects. It doesn’t measure your social and communication abilities, your level of empathy and compassion, your range of emotions and how you handle your feelings and react to others.
Your IQ measures the intelligence in your head. Your RIQ measures the intelligence of your heart!
Using my FREE guide, "What’s Your Relationship IQ? Dr. Love’s 25 Keys for Learning About Your Relationship Intelligence," we will look at how you function in relationships through a series of multiple choice options for how you would react in a given relationship situation. Preferred answers for the more healthy responses, analysis of your final score, analysis of why you might react the way you do and suggestions on how to do things differently are provided.
This test can work in tandem with your Personality Profile to help you understand what makes you tick when it comes to relationships while showing you all the areas in which you can improve in order to make your relationships happier, healthier and stronger. Dated My Best Friend

Today, I am going to share with you a letter I received at my Ask Dr Love Advice Column and my advice.

Dear Dr. Love,

I recently briefly dated one of my closest friends. We clicked really well and had feelings for each other and decided to give it a go. We are both in our 40s. After a few months, there were a lot of complications that we had not foreseen, perhaps because of the fact that we were such close friends and knew everything about each other. In any case, it reached a point where we could both see if was not going to end well. While I wanted to discuss this with him and end it nicely, he just completely shut me out and was rude on occasions for a few weeks. I let him be at first but eventually caved and asked him what is wrong. He told me he is done with the relationship for the same reasons I was going to give him. Of course, I was okay with this but I am so hurt that he would treat me this way. In any case, we decided to remain friends as we had been so close to each other for a good few years and it seemed a shame to let that go. He told me he still loves and cares about me but he is still not treating me well. I cannot avoid him altogether as we work together and have since we were in our 30s - so I have no intention of leaving my job, nor him. I want him in my life as a friend and a part of me does wish things had worked out as I do love him and care for him as well. However, I am willing to accept that they didn't. I just want to know why he is being this way now? What should I do about it?

Signed by:
Confused and Hurt

Boy does this guy need some relationship advice!
The first thing I would do is ask him why he’s been acting so meanly since the break-up? Since you both agreed to be friends, what’s the need for all this animosity?
See what he says.
I know you both decided that you couldn’t make the relationship work because you’re friends. This doesn’t make sense to me. In the best romantic relationships partners feel like best friends.
Something got triggered in both of you, and neither of you is aware of what it is.
As for why he’s treating you badly now…he may be feeling guilty that he’s done you harm. His guilt may have morphed into anger.
It’s also possible that he’s not so sure that he doesn’t want you as more than a friend. Whatever got triggered for him that created the problems in your relationship still seems to be active in him. Remember, romantic relationships go awry because the partners start to see each other as the parent that we had the most difficulty with. When this happens, negative feelings burst out. Suddenly, you start hating the one you love and you don’t know why. That would explain why he’s dumping on you.
He also may be using the anger as a way of creating space. Think about how teenagers use anger to push away from the family.
If he were un-conflicted about you, if he were 100% sure that he only wanted you as a friend, he wouldn’t need to muster up all this anger to push you away.
The guy needs therapy!
Meanwhile, back at the ranch…you said that you just want to be comfortable and resume the friendship. How about saying to him, “Listen, I’m comfortable with our being friends. I want us to be friends. If you keep kicking up such a fuss you’re going to hurt our friendship.”

Let’s see if that line cools his jets.

How To Get A Man To Open Up To You Emotionally

Do you often wonder what your man is thinking and feeling?

Do you feel like you need a crystal ball in order to know what’s going inside his head?

Have no fear. Dr. Love is here! There is a way to encourage even the most close-lipped guys to start spilling their emotional guts to you.

In order to help your guy talk, you need to understand the three main reasons why they resist doing so.

First: The male gender role itself encourages guys to keep their feelings close to the vest. This vest is more like a straightjacket that demands of men that they behave in a “macho” way by avoiding the appearance of weakness and vulnerability. Instead of talking about feelings, they focus instead on actions, goals and outcomes.

Second: When a man loves you he doesn’t want to hurt you. This is why many men hesitate to say what they’re thinking and feeling because they want to protect you.

Third: Men often feel inadequate when it comes to emotional communication. They are afraid to open up emotionally fraught discussions because they don’t feel able to hold their own verbally. They may also be afraid of facing your own emotional intensity–most especially your anger. Your anger upsets them more than you could ever imagine, especially when they love you and want to make you happy.

Now, that you know the three main reasons why guys resist opening up, let me give you a blueprint for handling each of these three blocks.

In the first case, you can help your guy dissolve the macho armor by reminding him that it takes a lot of courage and strength to face strong feelings. When he does exhibit the courage to put his toe in the water, make sure that you listen without judgment and thank him for sharing. When he feels good about having made this first attempt, he’ll feel braver to wade into deeper emotional waters with you.

In the second case–he’s holding back to protect you–you can help him to open up by reminding him that his silence isn’t protecting you or the relationship. On the contrary, if he doesn’t tell you what’s in his mind and heart, he could easily build up resentment, which can lead to a break up. One way to get him started is for you to ask him to grade how you’re doing as his partner. Ask him once a week what can you do to be a 10? Where are you falling short? Asking for feedback that’s couched in his own goal-oriented language will make it easier for him to start blabbing.

Third, if he’s afraid of the reaction he’s going to get from you when he opens up, it’s your job to learn how to contain your emotions so that you don’t overreact and dump intense feelings (especially anger) on him. If he sees that he can talk to you, and feel heard and not retaliated against, that will invite more and more honest communications from him.

I’ve given a few pointers on how to get even the toughest clams to open up. My book Till Death Do Us Part (Unless I Kill You First) will give you a complete, step-by-step, guide on how you can help your guy to open up emotionally. Since emotional disclosure is so highly linked to relationship satisfaction, I encourage you to learn my proven methods today.

Ten Tips for a Sizzling Sex Life

Are you on the verge of despair over your sagging sex life?

Even if your sex life is more like a wet blanket, don't give up hope! Read on to discover my appetite-whetting recipe for romance. And fasten your seat belts (and unfasten your chastity belts) because my ten tips are guaranteed to resurrect the sexual dead!

ONE: Love is Blind
When it comes to sex, here is the one case in which you may want to put on those blinders! Sexual pleasure has many dimensions, but the most important sexual organ we have is between our ears—meaning our brain. When one sense is hindered, our other senses -- via the brain -- clamor to compensate. For example, a deaf person has increased sensory awareness -- sight, smell, touch, and vibrations. You don’t have to be deaf or blind to tap into this innate ability of ours and use it to your advantage: Blindfolding your partner increases his/her sensory awareness because he doesn’t know where you are or what you are going to do next. This creates anticipation for better sex -- the tease. Tease your partner mercilessly with sensory objects, such as a feather or your tongue. Start off softly, as this excites nerve endings and makes them far more sensitive. Be careful not to over-stimulate the nerve endings, however, because after a while the neurons stop firing with such intensity and the sensation becomes null and void.

TWO: Give Your Partner a Sex Ed Class
After a while you may think you know how to please your partner in every way, but this is very rarely true. There is always something you haven’t tried, and there is bound to be something one of you always does that could be done differently. If you want to be turned on, leave no sexual stone unturned!
For better sex, have a lesson session in which you don’t think you know it all. Instead, allow yourselves to be at each other's mercy as teacher. Talk about things you haven’t tried, but would like to, then choose one suggestion from each partner, and get down tonight! Don’t lull yourself into thinking that you know what your partner likes, and fall into old habits. Lose this myth and put yourself in the student's chair for a while for better sex you won't regret.

THREE: Get Touchy
Sensual touch and massage is one of the most highly relaxing and sexy things you can do for your partner, which is why I include this in my 10 tips for better sex list. Our bodies are almost without exception tense in some area, if not many areas. This hinders our energy flow -- including sexual energy flow. Imagine a car that has a clogged fuel filter: the fuel (our energy) can’t get to where it needs to go quickly and smoothly, and the car performs inefficiently and ineffectively. Think of a massage as your body’s overhaul creating much better sex overall!
A relaxing sensual massage can unlock the body, creating some very intense orgasms and much better sex. The ability to relax your partner in this way should be high on your list of skills to master. The difference between a deeply relaxing massage and a sensual massage is in the manner of touch -- you don’t want to relax your partner too deeply because you will put him/her into a dead sleep. Raising the dead is what we’re after here, not the other way around.
The key to better sex in this case is to keep the senses alert, but the body relaxed. This means a firm touch, coupled with some sensory feather-light caresses. Once you've relaxed the major muscles -- shoulders and back -- work your way down to the buttocks. Strokes can then start to wander near but not on the genitals. Focus on the inner arms, armpits, inside of the legs and thighs and ear lobes. Don’t forget hands and feet -- there are thousands of nerve endings in our hands and feet that are very sensitive to touch. If you have no idea what a good massage feels like or how to perform one, spend some time in "lesson time" with your partner and learn what you both like or just run your hands all over each other’s bodies -- all over. Don’t rush to put the hot spots on the front burner or you’ll ruin the recipe.

FOUR: Dress for Success
Pretending to be something you're not comes easily to some people, and it can have benefits when done for fun. Stepping out of the role of being "yourself" can be a fun way to give each other permission to behave differently for better sex. Playing the role of someone else during sexual play is a very enjoyable way to give your partner some different sensations, and try things that you haven’t done before. Role playing is a great way to have better sex and to have fun with your partner in a light-hearted but sexy way. It is often the woman who does the dressing up simply because A) They enjoy it; and B) They have the resources of clothes, underwear and makeup – but, guys, don't forget that you can play too.

FIVE: Take a Trip to Fantasy Island
Talking about your fantasies with your partner is a very conducive form of sex play. It increases communication with your partner, which is of great importance. The more you know each other, the better the sex. Yes, you may be surprised by what comes out of your mouths. So keep it light at first and don’t throw each other into the deep end with fantasies about people you both know or reveal fetishes you aren't sure about. Sit back with a glass of wine and keep your clothes on -- for now. Fantasy play can also be incorporated into a game for better sex. Use your imagination, and keep it sexy. Take it in turns and see where it leads you.

SIX: Lay Your Cards on the Table
Get a pack of cards and play strip poker for better sex. It may seem like something you would have done when you were in high school (given the opportunity), but adult strip poker is a good way to get naked. Once you are both naked (or nearly naked), you can start on the really fun part--the winner gets to choose what action will be performed on him/her by the loser. Time limits like one minute on said action means that it is a prolonged game of seduction, which by the end will have you both clamoring to be both the winner and the loser. There are many other games you can play "strip" to, as long as there is a regular winner and loser to reward and punish respectively. The great part about these games is that you can both ask the other person to do something in a certain way that you may not necessarily have ever done before. It can get rather racy, and definitely lead to better sex in the end.

SEVEN: Talk Dirty
I actually object to the term talking dirty, since there’s nothing dirty about sex. But, since everyone knows what this means, I have to bow to the convention. Talking dirty has turned people on for millennia and will continue to do so because it has something other sex play doesn’t: words. Because our brains are our largest sexual apparatus, we respond to the spoken word automatically -- especially when someone says our name. The spoken word evokes emotions and sensations, as well as blood flow to various regions, depending on the topic.
This works very much in your favor when it comes to talking dirty to your lover because women are especially susceptible to what goes in their ears (and I don’t mean cotton buds or ear candles). Talking dirty is truly an art form. But brush up on your skills because bad technique will make you giggle rather than moan!

For better sex, start off easy with neutral topics such as how it feels to be inside her or have him inside you, how much you are enjoying the act and what you would like to do to each other next. Don’t get too carried away, but let the words flow out of you. Dirty talk can be a bit daunting at first, if you are not used to verbalizing these things, so practice. You will see how your partner responds to you. Dirty talk also comes under the "encouragement" category -- when your partner sees that you like something very much, he/she will be more interested in doing it more. The rawness of the sexual passion aroused with dirty talk is why it is so effective. A word to the wise, be careful with swearing too much -- though a good dose of foul language is part and parcel with dirty talk, too much swearing/name calling can be a turn off. Try to stick to positive words, and leave the commonly used insult words out. Guys, watch what you call her body parts too, making sure she can handle it before launching into your tirade of filth. Chances are, the passion from you will ignite hers two-fold.

EIGHT: Try a New Position
You probably already know how to bring your partner to orgasm in two ways. You repeat these regularly because they work -- there's no harm in that. However, if you never, ever try any new positions again, how will you ever know if you’re missing an even better angle? Guys, new positions need a reasonably high level of arousal in your lover, so choose your time to strike a new pose when she is quite obviously feeling very randy.

There is no limit to the number of ways to have sex, so you can use your imagination and come up with as many weird and wonderful inventions as you desire. Simply changing locations can dramatically change the position. For example, on top of the washing machine, on a bench, beanbag or table.

NINE: Give Her a Ring
By give her a ring, I’m not referring to jewelry—although that can definitely get the juices flowing! In this context, I’m talking about cock rings, which slow the drainage of blood from the penis, enabling a man to maintain a harder erection for longer. A very hard penis stimulates a woman’s vagina better than one that is getting soft around the edges. Cock rings are inexpensive and usually nice to look at, and make an interesting male sex toy to add to the collection. Cock rings ensure that a man can maintain the pace without faltering for better sex. This is very pleasing to your partner.

Critical Questions To Ask Before You Get Too Close

Do you have a hard time judging a person’s character?

Do you find yourself feeling fooled by people who seemed to be one thing and turned out to be another?

Finding Mr. or Ms. Right or your “Soul Mate” is a two-stage process.  First you have to know who is right for you, which you can achieve by using my free Create-A-Mate guide. But then, you have to find someone who fits the profile you’ve created. When answering your Create-A-Mate questions, you know whether or not you’re being honest and true to yourself and what you truly seek in a mate. But when dealing with another person, you’re confronted with a lot of “fronts,” or walls, blocks and defenses. This means that you’re meeting a person who is on stage performing the role of his/her ideal self. So, you’re only seeing the public face, not the real person behind the mask.

Sadly, people often turn out to anything but who you thought they were. While there is a social necessity for putting on one’s best face, when it comes to choosing a mate, you have to be able to cut through the facade and see beneath the mask. This is easier said than done!

For one thing, every human being has character defenses that formed in childhood and are largely unconscious. This means that most people aren’t even aware that they are hiding behind them!
On top of this, millions of people are sociopaths who make a career out of lying to others. The sociopath’s entire “mo” is to pretend to be someone that he or she is not in order to scam others out of their hearts and homes.

In addition, countless masses of people suffer under self-esteems that are low. These people falsely inflate themselves in order to build themselves up.

Why don’t we see through to the deeper truth? On the most superficial level, many of us choose to see the best in others and give them the benefit of the doubt. But there’s more. Many people are blinded to others’ flaws because their own self-esteems are too low. If we don’t feel worthy of love, then our energy isn’t focused on truly studying the other person because we’re too busy worrying that we won’t be liked and trying to put our own best forward.

If, for whatever reason, we feel emotionally hungry, needy and/or afraid of being alone, we see a relationship as a lifeline. In which case, our energy is spent trying to get hitched to someone, even to the point of pretending to be who someone else wants us to be, rather than focusing on “interviewing” the other to make sure he/she is right.

Last but not least, most people are simply in the dark when it comes to knowing what are the right questions to ask ourselves to determine who is the right kind of partner for us, and second, we don’t know the right questions to ask of prospective partners.

Knowledge is power. When you know the right questions to ask, you'll be empowered to steer clear of people who may be right for someone else but not right for you.

Your goal is to discover how much you have in common with your potential partner. What are you looking for are similarities in financial, sexual, religious, familial and political values, expectations, tastes and preferences.

You will also be looking for similar interests and hobbies, personality traits, emotional communication styles, intimacy needs, problems solving methods, and much more.
Here are the steps you’ll want to take:

Get my Critical Questions To Ask Before You Get Too Close guide and keep rereading the questions until they are very familiar. Now obviously, I don’t want you to grill your intended--he or she is not a steak. So, I don’t suggest serving up a copy of this test between dinner and dessert. However, keeping these questions in the back of your mind while you get to know someone, and then gently and gradually working them into your discussions is just what the doctor ordered. As with the questions I ask YOU in the Create-A-Mate system, what matters most when you’re evaluating potential partners is that you ask the right questions.
I even suggest starting a journal on paper or digitally (word processor, text file, etc.), and writing down your answers to these questions. This will ensure that you’re taking this seriously and being as thorough as possible and not fooling yourself or missing anything.

"Long Distance Love: Keeping Things Hot From Afar."

Long-distance relationships are difficult to make go the distance due the fact that physical absence is a lens that magnifies and distorts feelings. When a partner is out of sight, the mind becomes a blank screen onto which we project horror movies that are more like sequels to our past traumas. This causes us to brace for lightning to strike twice. So, for example, if you were cast off in a past relationship, you will be casting yourself as the star of the movie Castaway part two--meaning you will be expecting yet another abandonment.

No need to worry. You can shred the blank screen and turn your mental horror movies into a happy ending love story using my 5 simple steps:

1) Daily Maintenance. When you're not in close physical proximity, you have to go the emotional distance by doing extra daily due diligence. This means you're going to need to give your partner even more reassurances of your love than couples who live together. This will put your "love muscle" in tip-top shape so that when you eventually live together full-time, you'll have the skills to take your love to the finish line.

2) Be Transparent. Make sure that you share the details of your day--especially who you saw or will see. This trick helps you to be more present and real in each others' day-to-day lives and fends off jealousy, which is a common problem in long-distance relationships.

3) Avoid Texting No Nos. Don’t tackle tough topics via text (say that 3x fast!). When conflicts arise, remember you can’t address emotionally fraught topics by text. So get on the phone or Skype and TALK the old fashioned way.

4) Have Sex From Afar. When you’re a long distance couple, it’s easy for your sex life to become an ex life. When you’re randy, here’s where technology comes in handy! Have a Skype slumber Party, but don’t go to sleep. Log on to get your freak on.

5) Long Distance Date.  Just because you’re not physically together, doesn’t mean you can’t and shouldn’t have date nights. Get on the phone and watch a movie together, or cook the same dish together and then share the meal, or even get on the phone or Skype, snuggle up and fall asleep together.

I also devoted an entire Ask Dr. Love show titled "How to Make Your Long Distance Relationship Go the Distance," which you can listen to on this site or download to listen at home or on your mobile device. In this show I answer all of the questions below, expand on this 5 step guide in detail, and so much more!

Taming the Green-Eyed Monster of Jealousy

Do you often find yourself feeling jealous of your partner, even though you know deep down that your suspicions are probably irrational and unfounded?
Or...
Is your partner accusing you of “whoreacious” actions when your slate is squeaky clean?

In other words, are you or your partner jealousy junkies? And is jealousy holding your relationship hostage?

Jealousy is an emotion and typically refers to the negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety over an anticipated loss of something that you value, particularly a human connection. Jealousy often consists of a combination of anger, resentment, inadequacy, helplessness and disgust.

Just so you know, people don’t express jealousy through a single emotion or single behavior and instead express it through diverse emotions and behaviors. Some say romantic jealousy is a complex of thoughts, feelings, and actions that follow threats to self-esteem and/or threats to the existence or quality of the relationship, when those threats are generated by the perception of a real or potential attraction, emotional involvement or love between your partner and a rival—real or imagined.

So jealousy can be boiled down to any negative reaction that occurs as the result of a partner's extradyadic (this means outside the dyad—which is the fancy term for a couple) relationship that is real, imagined, or considered likely to occur.

In the case of sexual jealousy, this threat emanates from knowing or suspecting that one's partner has had (or desires to have) sexual activity with a third party.

Jealousy is also thought to be a protective reaction to a perceived threat to a valued relationship, caused by the partner's involvement with an activity and/or another person that is contrary to the jealous person's definition of their relationship.

It is also known that jealousy is triggered by the threat of separation from, or loss of, a romantic partner, when that threat is attributed to the possibility of the partner's romantic interest in another person.

At this point, I bet you’re reading to hear how to cure jealousy.

The cure comes to do healing the root cause, which is lack of self-love. If you love yourself for the unique person you are, then feeling threatened by imaginary rivals diminishes. And when you are no longer in competition with other women or men, you will become less vulnerable to feelings of jealousy.  Relationships mirror how you feel inside. If you feel irreplaceable in your relationship, you become irreplaceable, and then jealousy disappears. What I’m talking about is what I call raising your Personal Net Worth. This consists of becoming a loving and affirming parent to yourself, tending to your physical, emotional and spiritual needs, and surrounding yourself with loving and supportive people.

The ultimate way to prevent and/or cure jealousy is to feel that you are a unique and irreplaceable person.

And, paradoxically, the more you have the courage to expose who you truly are on the inside—the more authentic you allow yourself to be—the more you will be revealing just how unique and irreplaceable you are, which will help you transcend any actual threat of being replaced by potential rivals.

For a full explanation of how to cure yourself of jealousy by raising your Personal Net Worth, read my book Make Up Don’t Break Up.

What Is Love?

You love chocolate…
and busty blonds or bulging muscles…
cute furry animals…
your brother or sister…
your mom and dad…
your lover or spouse…

How can the same word have such different meanings?

Scientists tell us that passionate/romantic love is nothing more than a chemical cocktail that combines nerve growth factor, testosterone, estrogen, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin, and vasopressin.

I say this chemical cocktail is truly an elixir of the Gods for this love potion works divine magic on humanity, literally modifying our character, making us more flexible, kind, thoughtful, considerate, creative, generous, receptive and responsive to our beloveds. Love is truly medicine that fortifies our soul’s true purpose on earth: To perfect our ability to love others.

People think of love as a feeling. I say that love is an action. In order for love to survive and thrive, you must actively appreciate the goodness in each other each and every day of your lives.
But that is easier said than done. Because no matter how similar two people are conflict inevitably erupts in all intimate relationships. It is how you handle your conflicts and the negative feelings that go with it that will determine whether your love makes old bones or sadly ends up in the bone yard.

As humans, we must eternally strive to keep overcoming and surpassing the hurdles that life throws in the path of love. Each day we must work to keep love alive in our hearts, treating the gift of each day as yet another chance to perfect our ability to love more perfectly.

Create-A-Mate: How To Create A Profile Of The Perfect Partner

When it comes to mate selection, most people allow themselves to be guided by superficial factors such as physical appearance or outward trappings of success, such as flashy cars, and so on.

Despite the conscious rationalizations that most people come up with to explain their choice of mate, the reality is that mate choice is primarily driven by the unconscious mind. In fact, it’s said that 98% of the choices we make (the jobs we choose and the partners we select) is driven by the unconscious part of the psyche. Unfortunately, in the realm of mate selection, the unconscious mind is notorious for steering us wrong--especially if we are still saddled with Old Scars from childhood.

Unfortunately, because we choose partners who are limited and damaged in the exact same ways that our parents were, we never succeed in obtaining that Happy Ending. Instead we just keep banging our heads on the proverbial wall, fighting the same old fight, draining our lives away day by day, all the while getting nowhere.

To truly break free, you need to identify and heal your Old Scar. When your healing is finished, you will no longer be drawn to a “damaged goods” domestic partner. I have many ways to assist you in healing: the advice archives on this site are loaded with articles on this topic (see unfinished business, repetition compulsion, and Old Scars). In addition, my book, Till Death Do Us Part(Unless I Kill You First) presents my step-by-step plan for identifying and healing your Old Scars. Last but not least, my book Make Up Don’t Break Up shows you how to further nurture yourself and raise your self-esteem.

Once you’ve healed your Old Scar and raised what I call your Personal Net Worth, you will be ready to form a healthy relationship. At this point, you are ready to magnetize the right partner to you.

My free Create A Mate workbook will help you to do just that. This guide is based on all the factors that are related to compatibility, which includes Homogamy (or similarity in all the areas that matter most), Relationship Enhancing Communications, and strong Couple Identity. ( Read my article "How Can I Tell If We're Compatible?" for a full understanding of compatibility.)

Is Your Partner Ready For Love? Or Does Your Frog Have Too Many Warts?

Nobody is perfect. We all have character flaws. But if you’re reading this, you're probably experiencing relationship problems of some kind and wondering if it's possible that your partner is too broken to form a lasting and solid bond with you.

You may be asking yourself if it's possible that your frog could shed those warts and grow into a prince or princess, or are those warts permanent? And is there any way to tell? I've created a test that will enable you to determine your partner’s “Relationship Readiness” so you can find out once and for all if your partner has Old Scars from childhood or any other kind of fatal relationship flaw that means you should throw in the glove!

Usually, there are two signs that your relationship isn’t working: you’re fighting like felines and canines OR you feel that you’re drifting apart. Whatever, the situation may be, you know deep down that something is wrong because you aren’t happy with the way your partner is acting and treating you.

The first step to breaking free of this pattern is to remove the blinders, stop pretending that your partner is not covered in warts and see your partner for who he/she really is: a carbon copy of the parent who let you down. The second step to breaking free of this pattern is to vow to choose partners who are NOT covered in emotional warts and are therefore dead wrong for you.

Now that you understand what's going on, it's time to take an honest look at your partner and see whether the person you’re dating, engaged to, living with or married to has the psychological chops to form and or maintain a stable and lasting relationship with you.

How Can I Tell If We're Compatible?

Many of the relationship problems people have asked me for advice about over the years have had to do with compatibility issues. Sometimes people don't suspect that their problems are due to incompatibility, while others suspect that incompatibility is to blame when it really isn't.

According to research, there are three main factors that are closely linked to compatibility. The first is Homogamy, or similarity, the second is Relationship Enhancing Communications, and the third is strong Couple Identity.

Let’s start with Homogamy. Research proves that homogamy, or similarity, is a master key that unlocks the mystery of compatibility. The notion of opposites attracting is a common relationship myth when, in fact, couples who are too dissimilar find themselves fighting over every issue big and small. The truth is, the more similar you and your partner are, the more compatible you will be.

Now to turn to the second key factor in determining compatibility: Relationship Enhancing Communications. Even if you aren’t bogged down by Old Scars, and even if you are similar in all the areas that matter most, you and your partner may still be arguing. When couples find themselves trapped in ongoing and intractable fighting cycles, they will naturally question their level of compatibility. While fighting may, indeed, be a sign of incompatibility, it can also be indicative of various communication skills deficits that lead to fighting and not a symptom of incompatibility at all. And, for these couples, when vital communication skills are acquired, they discover that they always were and will continue to be quite compatible.

The third aspect of compatibility is what’s called Couple Identity. This term refers to how strongly a couple sees itself as a “we” instead of each partner remaining an individual “I.” Interestingly, UC Berkeley researcher, Robert Levenson, found that couples who emphasized their “separateness” by using pronouns such as “I,” “me” and “you” were found to be less satisfied in their marriages. This was especially true for older couples. Their use of separateness pronouns was most strongly linked to unhappy marriages, according to the study. To have a happy marriage, being part of a "we" is well worth giving up a bit of "me." Levenson’s research is published in The Journal of Psychology and Aging.

How Can I Tell If He Is Really Into Me?

No matter whether you’re young or old, and no matter how much life experience you have, you may still be unclear as to whether the guy you have your eye on is truly interested in you.
I mean, he may be attracted to you. But, let’s face it…a guy can get turned on by a stiff breeze!
So how can you tell if his interest extends beyond mere physical attraction?
Is there a way to tell whether he sees you as a potential soul mate rather than a mere sexual playmate?
How can you know if he is truly interested in YOU...the kind of interest that makes a guy want to know you more deeply, and even create a lifetime of lasting love?
Is there a way to know BEFORE you expose yourself and invest your heart? And, last but not least, is there something you can do to fan the flames of his heart and even spark his interest in you?
The answer to all of these questions is a resounding Yes!!
When you use my free "Is He Interested In Me? Dr. Love’s Guide To Determining If The Guy You’re Interested In Is Really Into You" test. you will be able to if your heart throb’s heart beats for you. This test will also show you how to raise his heartbeat (no, we’re not speaking about other body parts!).
Before you take the test, I want to give you a few general pointers regarding men and mate selection.
Men are hunters by nature. This means that they are instinctively wired to hunt prey and pursue the partners they want. So when a man is interested he will move heaven and earth to get to you.
Yet, paradoxically, research shows that men are afraid of being rejected. This means that even the most confident men will wait for signals from you--what I call Green Lights--that let them know that you are interested in them before they stick their necks out.
In fact, research shows that women are actually the ones to make the first move by sending Green Lights to let a man know that he’s welcome to approach.
And, according to observational research, men only approach women after they have received clear Green Lights!
Green Lights consist of open, approachable body language, praising, admiring and appreciating him, smiling, making eye contact, and offering a body posture that is open and receptive.
Interestingly, studies also show that women’s signals are often so subtle that most men miss these signals altogether! The result is they never approach you because they don’t register your interest.
In conclusion, I want you to register two points: First, since men are wired to pursue, this means that you should never pursue or chase a man who is the object of your interest. Let the male do his job, which is to compete with other males to win you, who he sees as the most desirable of females.

How to Spot a Player BEFORE You Get Played

Are you putting your body, mind, heart and soul at risk by having sex too soon?

In this edition of Ask Dr. Love radio, I’m going to discuss why the opinions of the dating coach who appeared on my show last week are dead wrong and dangerous for you to follow!

If you listened last week, you heard him say that if a woman wants to form a relationship, she  must  put the erotic cart before the emotional horse--and have sex from the starting gate.

What this coach doesn't know is that there is science behind why premature sex can be dangerous, especially for women, and counterproductive to the formation of a relationship.

For one thing, sex too early in the game puts a woman at risk of becoming the target of a player who has no interest in forming a relationship...or falling for someone who just isn’t a good fit.

Second, and contrary to what this coach said, having sex too soon can actually drive a man away.

Tuesday, August 13th, 1pm (EST) on Talk Zone Radio

Tune in to find out why practicing self-love by setting boundaries for yourself in the key to forming a solid relationship. It is precisely during this time of waiting and watching that a woman is supposed to assess her prospective partner’s capacity to form a relationship and evaluate whether compatibility exists.
